GST Registration

What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It was implemented on July 1, 2017, replacing multiple indirect taxes such as VAT, service tax, excise duty, and others. GST aims to unify India into a single national market by eliminating cascading taxes and simplifying compliance for businesses.

GST is categorized into three types:

  1. Central GST (CGST): Collected by the central government on intra-state supplies.

  2. State GST (SGST): Collected by the state government on intra-state supplies.

  3. Integrated GST (IGST): Collected by the central government on inter-state supplies and imports.

The primary objectives of GST are:

  • To create a unified tax structure.

  • To eliminate the cascading effect of taxes.

  • To increase transparency and compliance.

  • To boost the ease of doing business.

Under GST, businesses whose turnover exceeds a specific threshold are required to register. Registration is mandatory for certain entities regardless of turnover, such as e-commerce operators, interstate suppliers, and businesses with reverse charge liability.
